I think that I have crossed a mile-stone this weekend and, with only a few shouts, I have managed to get some gears. I can now sit in the driver's seat and move the gear stick and it goes into what I hope is a gear! It has taken me a couple of weekends to get it sorted out. Only having a couple of axle stands, it wasn't possible to raise the car that high of the ground, so it took a lot of crawling under the car trying to measure the linkage rods, cutting, getting back under, then doing it it again. When I had got it about right I got out my welder and tried to hold it together whilst tacking it. I got the wife to sit in the car and make sure that the gear stick was in the right place whilst I tacked the rods together. Once I was happy with everything I pulled it all out and welded it together properly. When I had sorted that out a wire brush on a drill was employed to remove the rust and old paint. Some primer and black sprayed on and it now looks like new apart from the welds . It was Father's day last week and my son got me a mug I was over the moon with this as it was a Bad Obsession mug so I can now stand around the mini drinking tea and looking professional. Haha!
